So I finally went on my first artist's date! It only took me a year to go on one!
For the past year I've been reading Julia Cameron's The Artists's Way--a blend of self help, hippie spiritual teachings, and writing assignments if conceived by an elementary school guidance counselor (think writing imaginary letters to people who were mean to you). The purpose of the book is to make you feel more empowered and shed the layers of insecurity and doubt that were set in by years of criticism and toxic people. This is accomplished by writing daily morning pages (three pages you hand write as soon as you wake up) and weekly artist dates. An artist date can by anything from coloring with crayons to taking that African dance class you've always wanted to take.
For my artist date, I decided to go to Governor's Island and rent a bike. I just had this urge to ride around with the view of the water.
I can't say that my artist date lead me to figure out my next spec script, but I did have a pretty friggin good time. At one point, I biked as fast as I could and said outloud "Go Speed JiJi, Go Speed JiJi", terrorizing all the small children and ambling couples who stumbled onto my path.
I should bike more.
